    Linuxdmesg | grep CD-ROM - showed the devices.
    mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/cdrom /cdrom - was used to mount cdrom..
    /etc/fstab - has details for mounting.

    Softwarewhen ximian evolution is installed, or if you go to a new version, the spell checker is not set up by default. To do this you have to do the below... OO on the otherhany requires 'apt-get install myspell-en-gb' or myspell package for your contery.

    LinuxHave been trying to change the size of application menue and text boxfonts for a while now. i have a 21" monior and the Address/URL bar anddrop down menus in mozilla are tiny. This is also the case in otherapps. I am sure there is a system wide setting somewhere but cant workit out. This is how far I have got..

    LinuxBeen trying to do this for ages for desktop users. finaly found a sulution. Set UID as root for the shutdown program. Set UID, or SUID, makes the program run as that user, rather than the current user. Obviously you have to be root to do this:-

    chmod a+s /sbin/shutdown

    you can then add a launcher to the gnome top bar with the command '/sbin/shutdown -h now'

    SoftwareOn my travels I was looking for a editor like Textpad (a windows editor). Finaly came across bluefish and so far so good. if you are using linux give it a go. Suports most languages. See http://bluefish.openoffice.nl/

    LinuxKind of odd but this took me a while to find. My problem was the internal clock did not work too well. I wanted to use NTP (Network time Protocol) but havent quite got there so I set the time using 'date --set HH:MM' while as root. I have now solved the problem with the -g switch on ntpd, read on...

    SoftwareThe 1.1 release of openOffice.org is almost there. They are up to 'candadit release 5' whitch means they have got through 5 cycles of user testing. This means that is it probably as stable (if not more so) than MS orrafice. One of the great things for new users is you can set it up to behave just like word.
